The Harrison Memorial Library, built in 1928, with its domestic scale and human-centric design, embodies Carmel’s ethos of “intimate, rural charm and village character.” The library is a cherished community landmark, central to Carmel-by-the-Sea’s rich architectural, artistic, and literary traditions.
The nearly 100-year old building is in vital need of restoration and upgrades that will significantly enhance the public’s experience – deferred maintenance, accessibility, replacement of deteriorated and obsolete systems including lighting and technology, and updating of programmatic space layouts to meet user needs.
The Carmel Public Library Foundation is leading a capital campaign to fund the project, with the goal of completing construction by the library’s Centennial year in 2028. The funds consist primarily of private donations and the estimated goal is $17.5 million.
